Biography
In this workshop, Beat Making Lab founders Zach Lee and Pierce Freelon will take participants through the building blocks of producing unique and original content in the form of a song.

Zach Lee coordinated an Apple-sponsored Beat Making Lab (music production training) in Haiti and has since laid the groundwork for Beat Making Lab's expansion, with a focus on sustainably rooting programs in communities and stimulating creative economies in emerging markets. 

Pierce Freelon is a professor, director, musician, Emmy award–winning producer, and former candidate for mayor of Durham, NC. He founded Blackspace, a digital maker space where youth learn about music, film, and coding. He is the writer, composer, and codirector of an animated film series called History of White People in America, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018. In 2012 he cofounded Beat Making Lab, a PBS web series that took him from community centers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to making beats with environmentalist Jane Goodall. He is the frontman of the jazz and hip-hop band The Beast.

They will demonstrate how this form of expression can tell powerful stories and be sure to send participants off with a little hop in their step.
