I am ECHOBORG
About
I am ECHOBORG is a performance that is created by an audience in conversation with an AI. They are set a challenge to discover the best possible outcome for relations between humans and intelligent machines. Each show is different depending on the conversation they have. This is a pioneering use of AI as a tool to deliver genuine audience agency in the creation of an experiential exploration of the impacts of automation on what it is to be human. The AI has been built for the show by an award-winning participatory dramatist working with a highly experienced chat-bot maker.

The goal in Rik Lander's work is always to allow audiences to participate and have genuine agency. There is a balance to be struck between story structure and player freedom. From magic-tree (2001), one of the UK's first web dramas, to The Memory Dealer (2010–13), Lander has been exploring this balance and how to support different levels of participation. AI is a superb tool for this.

Phil D. Hall has been a ChatBot builder since 1982—yep, 36 years—and is collaborating on this creation. He sees I Am Echoborg as a socio-cultural highlight in a career in which he has worked on more than 60 conversational systems across all sectors.
